  • Krishnakumar Balasubramanian is heading to NEC Research for a six month internship. He will work with Kai Yu (Dec 2010).
  • Josh Dillon was selected for the prestigious Marshall Sherfield fellowship. The fellowship will provide funding for a two year post-doctoral position at Cambridge University with Prof. Zoubin Ghahramani (Dec 2010).
  • Guy Lebanon was quoted in a recent AJC story on search engine optimization attempts to influence local politics. Guy wrote a blog post that was quoted by a follow up story (Sep 2010).
  • The ML@GT website has been revised by Seungyeon, Krishnakumar, and Ravi. It now contains a list of all ML related presentations on campus (Sep 2010).
  • Yi Mao successfully defended and deposited her dissertation. She is off to Microsoft. Also: Josh and Mingxuan passed the thesis proposal exam (Aug 2010).
  • Guy Lebanon will present a tutorial on machine learning for information visualization at VisWeek 2010 (with Fei Sha). Guy will also co-chair a VisWeek workshop on large scale visual analytics.
  • The SMLV group has two papers in COLING 2010. Krishnakumar and Seungyeon will travel to Beijing to present the papers.
  • Joshua Dillon is the reciepient of the 2010 DHS graduate fellowship in visual analytics. The fellowship provides for 2.5 years of tuition and stipend, travel money, and internship/collaboration opporuntities with the homeland security research community.
  • Guy Lebanon received the 2010 Raytheon Faculty Fellowship Award. This means that he gets to pursue an interdisciplinary project with collaborator Irfan Essa from IC on data analysis for computational journalism.
  • Krishnakumar Balasubramanian received the 2010 MS Research Award from the College of Computing at Georgia Tech. The award includes $500. Congratulations Krishna!
  • The Division of Computational Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech was just made a school. This means more recognition for the role of CSE within Georgia Tech and the college of computing.
  • Krishna was admitted into the CS PhD program and will stay with the lab as a PhD student.
  • Seungyeon Kim is a new MS student who is joining our lab. He will work on sequential visualization of documents.
